Few would argue that many foods that fall under the increasingly broad umbrella of UPF are unhealthy. The dangers of sugar-laden fizzy drinks, or snacks that are bursting with salt and fat have been known for many years. But as this important paper demonstrates, “UPF” is such a broadly- and ill-defined term that relying on it to determine what is healthy and unhealthy risks, in the words of the Chief Scientific Adviser to the UK’s Food Standards Agency, “throwing the baby out with the bathwater”. - Jeremy Coller, President, Alternative Proteins Association
